Network expansion begins
PŸUR set to equip up to 12,000 homes in Altenburg with fibre-optic connections
- 7,500 properties owned by major property management companies in Altenburg will benefit from the technology
- Opportunity to bring fibre-optic network access to an additional 4,500 apartments served by PŸUR
- 45 kilometres of new fibre-optic lines to be laid
Berlin, 9 February 2022. The Tele Columbus Group and its PŸUR brand are launching a large-scale expansion of fibre optics in Altenburg. The biggest housing associations, which own some 7,500 properties, will gradually be provided with fibre-optic connections from spring 2023. The roll-out also includes an opportunity to connect an additional 4,500 homes owned by smaller property management companies to the fibre-optic network. Internet speeds of 1,000 Mbit/s will be possible thanks to fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology.
The FTTH network upgrade was agreed as part of contract renewals with AWG Wohnungsgenossenschaft Altenburg e.G., SWG Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH and WAG Wohnungsgenossenschaft „Altenburg-Glashütte“ e.G. Work on the gigabit broadband expansion will begin in spring 2023 with the laying of 45 kilometres of underground fibre-optic lines in Altenburg.
The agreed upgrade standard is fibre to the home (FTTH), which involves replacing all conventional coaxial cables with fibre-optic lines. The optical signals are not converted into electrical signals for the internet modem and TV until they reach the cable socket in the living room. This technology is regarded as extremely future-proof and even has the potential to deliver multi-gigabit internet bandwidths.
Alongside the agreed 7,500 homes, the area served by PŸUR includes a further 4,500 properties, meaning that up to 12,000 households in Altenburg could benefit from gigabit-speed connections provided by the Tele Columbus Group as part of the expansion of the fibre-optic network.
“In cooperation with the housing industry, the Tele Columbus Group is making a decisive contribution here in Altenburg to ensuring constant future-readiness though broadband access, which could also become a significant factor in making the region even more attractive,” says Christian Biechteler, Chief Sales Officer Housing Industry & Infrastructure at Tele Columbus AG.
The Tele Columbus Group builds fibre-optic infrastructure on the basis of open networks – an approach that allows other providers to use the lines laid in Altenburg to deliver their own products.
