Press Release
Tele Columbus Group completes additional network upgrades
PŸUR launches gigabit-speed internet options for over 183,000 households in Saxony and Berlin
- Leipzig, Zwickau and even more gigabit access for Berlin
- Area communities outside the city centre also to receive gigabit access
- 1,000 Mbit/s available nationwide in nearly one in two PŸUR internet households
Berlin, 12 January 2023. Tele Columbus AG is systematically continuing its gigabit network expansion campaign. As part of the nationwide drive to upgrade networks to the DOCSIS 3.1 telecommunications standard, 145,000 households in the Leipzig and Zwickau regions will receive high-speed internet service with gigabit bandwidths of up to 1,000 Mbit/s. In addition, another 38,000 households in Berlin will be cleared for gigabit bandwidths.
Until now, PŸUR has offered internet speeds of up to 400 Mbit/s in the fibre optic cable networks found in Leipzig and Zwickau. Since 10 January 2023, 145,000 households there have been able to choose from speeds of 500 and 1,000 Mbit/s.
In the Leipzig area, PŸUR internet users in Böhlen, Delitzsch, Halle, Markkleeberg, Markranstädt, Taucha and Zwenkau can now access the internet at gigabit speeds. In the Zwickau area, PŸUR provides households in Hartenstein, Lößnitz, Reinsdorf and Wilkau-Haßlau with optional gigabit-speed internet services.
The Tele Columbus Group launched the first gigabit network through its PŸUR brand in Berlin back in 2019. As a Berlin-based company, Tele Columbus is actively helping the city-state’s senate achieve its gigabit accessibility targets. Following the completion of further upgrades, all PŸUR-brand internet connections in Berlin are now gigabit-ready.
The accelerated speeds are made possible by improved signal transmission technology that is capable of using more transmission frequencies. The addition of new circuits was preceded by local line modernisation and network enhancement. Powerful, high-performance broadband networks are more important than ever due to the increase in transmission speeds and the rising monthly transmission volume per customer.
An ever-growing number of PŸUR customers in the Tele Columbus Group’s network can take advantage of gigabit-speed bandwidths. By upgrading its network nationwide, Tele Columbus plans to transport most of the roughly 2.4 million households it provides with internet service to the gigabit age. In the weeks ahead, the number of households with access to such speeds is set to reach 1.2 million.
